Argyllshire Gathering 2

from Argyllshire Gathering [ep] by John Harvey

/

about

A twenty-second section was extracted from the recording of the ‘duet’ and divided into four 5-second sub sections: A, B, C, and D. On the left-hand track, these are arranged according to the traditional ‘primary’ structure or ‘ground’ of piobaireachd music, and played in the following order: AAB, ABB, and AB. The sequence of three variations is looped twenty times. On the right-hand track, the sub sections are arranged according to the traditional ‘secondary’ structure, and played in the following order: ABCD, CBAD, and CD. This, somewhat longer, sequence is looped as many times as necessary to achieve an overall length coterminous with the left-hand track. On those occasions when the sub-sections comprising the two sequences or tracks coincide, the music returns to the same level of desynchronicity as was present in the original source recording (with an attendant narrowing of the stereo field).
